Pune city is one of the biggest cities in the Indian state of Maharashtra.. The old name of Pune was Punawadi. Before the indian independence, Pune served as the monsoon capital of Bombay Province.. The name Pune was taken from the name Punya meaning holy spot. The meeting point of two rivers is sacred in Hindu culture and within this city there exists a meeting point of 2 streams. This place is named Punyanagari. The town is supposed to have got its name from Punyanagari, meeting place of these rivers.
The story of the region begins from fifth century A.D. The Kasba Peth in Pune was set up in fifth century. The excavations indicate that the agricultural community called Punnaka was there in Pune in 8th century. The Yadava kings of Deogiri ruled Pune city from 9th century to the year 1327. After the rule of Nizamshahi sultans, Mughal rule was set up in 17th century. Chatrapathi Shivaji launched Maratha Empire. His father established Lal Mahal and Shivaji stayed there together with his mom Jijabai. The Ganesha temple, Kasba Ganapathi was established during his period. Kasba Peth, Raviwar Peth and Shaniwar Peth had been as well established. Shivaji turned the king of this area in the year 1647 and then had been created Guruwar, Somwar and Ghorpade and Ganesh Peths.
In the next half of 17th century, the town fell into the hands of the Mughal king Aurangazeb. The spot was renamed Muhiyabath. When Shivaji died in the year 1680, his son Sambhaji was killed. Peshwa Baji Rao ruled from the year 1720 to 1740 and during his time, Shaniwarwada was built. Numerous establishments of historical significance were built during this era. He was succeeded by Nanasaheb Peshwa. The renowned Parvati Temple Complex and Katraj Lake water supply system had been constructed by him. His rule continued until the year 1761 and he lost in the Third Battle of Panipat. Yashwantrao Holkar captured the location immediately after the Battle of Poona.
In the year 1817, in the Third Anglo Maratha War, Peshwas had been beaten and the metropolis came under the administration of the Bombay Province. In the year 1858, Pune Municipality came into existence. Baji Rao The second had been the final Peshwa of Pune. Since he didn't have an heir he adopted Nanasaheb Peshwa as his son. Nanasaheb fought against the British East India Company with the support of Jhansi Rani Lakshmi Bai and Tatya Tope.
